Most attorneys aren’t exactly early adopters of new technology. Plenty of us don’t rush to install the newest software when it comes out. (I know a few lawyers who would still use MS DOS if the world would allow them.) But, those of us who are slow to update might be forced to soon.
If you’re still using an outdated operating system, Chrome is about to kick you off – which is great news. There’s no better time to update your aging software than today.
If you’re computer is chugging along on an operating system that’s nearly 15 years old, it’s time to update it, whether Chrome is forcing your hand or not. Starting in April, 2016, Chrome will no longer support Windows XP, Windows Vista, and older versions of Mac OS X, PC Magazine reports.
Yes, You Can Start Using Windows 10
We get why you might be cautious about updating your operating system. You’re familiar with the one you have, know its workings and its quirks. But if that kept us from updating, we’d all still be using typewriters.
It’s time to get on board with a modern OS. And thankfully, after the disaster that was Windows 8, the most modern Windows is quite nice. Windows 10 is easy to use, comes with strong security protections (and some privacy weaknesses), and is generally a solid, highly rated operating system. If your current OS is a few years out of date (Ahem. We’re looking at you, Windows 7 Enterprise users), now is the time to jump straight to Windows 10.
While You’re at It
While you’re updating your OS, start modernizing the rest of your software. A good password manager can help keep your practice secure. You should also consider reviewing your email system to make sure that your email is secure enough for client communications.
If you really want to get modern, jump to the latest version of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Or ditch Microsoft altogether by trying out some good word processing and presentation alternatives.
And please, please, update your antivirus program.
