Microsoft Settles With Patent Holding Co Virnetx For 23M

In September, we blogged about the ongoing legal battle between VirnetX, a patent holding company (or patent troll, depending on your point of view), and Apple. VirnetX claimed a patent on the process of establishing a secure tunnel between two computers on the Internet. Raytheon Loses Troll Ish Texas Patent Venue Shopping Battle

State Not Liable For Using Film Of Sunken Pirate Ship

A federal appeals court rejected a filmmaker’s complaint that North Carolina pirated his footage of Blackbeard’s sunken ship. In Allen v. Cooper, the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals said the state was immune from liability for using the film of Queen Anne’s Revenge. It ran aground in 1718 near Beaufort, North Carolina, where the plaintiff’s crew filmed the underwater wreckage. The state used some images of the pirate ship for tourism and educational purposes, a fair use under copyright law....

Why Should Lawyers Care About Schrodinger S Cat

Schrodinger’s Cat is probably the most famous thought experiment in the history of, well, thought experiments. It poses that – after being placed in a sealed box with a flask of poison and a radioactive source – the cat will be alive and dead at the same time. Theoretical physicists love this stuff, but Futurama makes it much more fun. It basically sets up the moment when reality collapses into one possibility or another....

With Apple Sim New Ipads Can Connect To Different Carriers

I have one question for Apple after yesterday’s presentation: How in the heck did you forget to mention Apple SIM? How? It allows you to hop data networks when you don’t have coverage, or when one carrier is offering a cheaper price, or when you travel to the UK. It is, in essence, a cross-carrier SIM card that supports AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the United States and EE in the United Kingdom, with hopefully more networks to come....

3 Digital Security Resources For Lawyers

One thing is for sure about technology: it will become outdated. It usually happens just as you think you understand the “old” technology. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would say “they” plan it that way – like automakers plan cars to fall apart exactly one day after the warranties expire. Addison Cameron-Huff, who blogs as a “tech lawyer, Torotonian, entrepreneur and programmer,” tries to keep current with lawyerly technologies....
