According to some 10,000 senior executives, strategic thinking is the most important skill required of business leaders.

The Harvard Business Review conducted the survey, which showed “the most critical leadership behavior” is being strategic. Without it, the future of business is at stake.

When everybody is saying the same thing, there must be something to it. Here are three ways to break it down into a skill set.

1. Vision

Forbes writer Paloma Cantero-Gomez has “vision” at the top of her list for strategic thinkers. It’s that ability to see the next big thing for their business.

“They see the potential for how the world should exist and take steps to get there,” she writes.

2. Perception

Strategic thinking is built upon perceiving, she says. You really have to see what’s going on in your organization.

In business, that takes time. Dorie Clark, writing for Harvard Business Review, says leaders have to take the time to prioritize goals and strategize how to reach them.

3. Assertion

By making assignments and being assertive, business leaders can push toward corporate goals. General counsel can do it, too. 

Of course, that doesn’t mean bullying. “It means taking a deep breath and figuring out how to turn the tables,” says Randall Ryder for the Lawyerist.
